For mage? Arcane build worked wonders for me in both solo and in groups. The DPS is very high and you can spam Arcane Explosion to rack up more DPS then anyone else when there are three or more mobs. Later you get Arcane Blast which becomes your bread and butter and pretty much the only attack you use except for Arcane Missile. The difference is that now you deal a lot of single target damage over AoE damage which makes you perfect for fighting bosses and such.
When soloing you will want the talent that reduces the push-back while casting arcane missile by 100%. Use Mana Shield as well and you become very hard to kill. Talents to improve your Mana Shied are useful as well. I was soloing Elites once I got Slow. Hope that helps. If you want to make the Magic DPS I would not be opposed to making a PLD to be the tank.
